Tim Aves Wolfpack At St Annes Castle Graet Leighs 01/03/2013

A taxi from the bright lights of Chelmsford to the allegedly oldest pub in England at Great Leighs. I like St Annes, it is a proper pub that sells proper beer and has a great atmosphere, they also have lots of gigs, so well worth a look. We just got in to see the end of the support act, a feisty American lady playing blues, Sofie Reed. Plays on her own much the same as Chris Dollinger but more upbeat. I will have to get there earlier next time as there is normally a decent support.

Next was a band that I have seen before, Tim Aves Wolfpack. They are a blues band but I think a bit more than that. They play mostly covers and then mostly Howlin Wolf covers but unlike a lot of blues bands that we see, they play with a lot more energy and seem to be a lot more modern if that makes sense. Of course you are going to be good with a guitarist such as Joel Fisk in your ranks and a really powerful rhythm section, with Tim Aves on slide guitar and harmonica it makes a very powerful combo. I am pretty shit on set lists as I always tell everybody but I definitely remember Killing Floor, Back door man and Smokestack lightning. I must stop drinking so much. Sofie Reed got up on stage later and we had duelling harmonicas between her and Tim. Nick Garner also played harp with the band and came round with a hat for a collection for the group.

All in all a top night out, recommend the band, the pub and with 2 gigs so far this week who said Chelmsford has no live music.
