The Kings Head

Great Baddow

A night out in Bushwacker land, Great Baddow. The Kings Head puts on quite a few gigs mostly on Saturday nights and mostly cover bands. It was the first time I had seen the Collective who are made up of Guitar, Bass, Drums and Keyboards and as you would guess play Paul Weller songs from the Jam, via the Style Council to his solo stuff and if you read the websites they are one of the best. It’s nearly a week since I saw them so I will struggle with the setlist but suffice to say they played all the hits including “Speak like a child” and “Changing man” which you don’t get on a normal Jam tribute. I have to say I enjoyed them immensely and all the good things that I had heard about them were well justified. There were great renditions of “From the floorboards up” “To be someone,” (probably my favourite Jam track) I am pretty sure that I heard “Broken Stones” and all of the hits from the Jam catalogue. Really enjoyed it and I will go to see them again. As I said I had a few beers and it was over a week ago.

The pubs is a good one as well, as I have said they try to put on a lot of music and all of you Baddow people should support them. The beer was drinkable and even though I was not a local but a sophisticated City dweller I was made welcome. It felt a bit strange though having your fingers counted by the door staff, to make sure you didn’t have 6 of them , it’s a bit close to the Dengie peninsular for me.

Anyway a good night and please take time to watch a band or two there or else these pubs wont bother anymore.

Duncan, October 2013.
