Patti Smith The Troxy 13/09/2012

Thursday night, a new venue with an artist who I have always wanted to see. First of all the Troxy in Commercial Road, East London is very easy to get to, but if you fancy a beer before it might be worth stopping at Canary Wharf or anywhere else apart from Limehouse for your pre-gig drink. We could only find 3 pubs in the vicinity, the 2 nearest to the venue were awful and the best one The Railway, right next to the Station was just about passable. Anyway it’s not all about drinking. The Troxi is another old cinema which has the odd gig now and then. Downstairs standing , upstairs sitting a couple of bars selling small plastic bottles of lager for over £4.

There were a lot of very young people there and not so many of the older generation with a large proportion being female. Patti came on and was as good as I hoped she would be starting with “Dancing Barefoot” and “Redondo Beach,” as usual I am hopeless on remembering set lists but I can remember “Free Money” (a great song), “Beneath the Southern Cross“, “Ghost Dance.” Patti left the stage and the band jammed playing “Night Time,” I know George Thorogood does this one though I am sure it’s not his song, Johnny Thunders “Born to lose” The Blue Magoos “We aint got nothing yet” finishing with the Seeds “Pushin’ too hard,” I love those old raw 3 minute rock tracks. Patti returned and played “This is the girl” for Amy Winehouse, I never understood how Amy Winehouse was any good but I think most people disagree with me. We then got “Because the night” I always remember this song because it was on the Juke box at the Saracens Head and if you put the b side “Godspeed” on, someone would always kick the machine to get rid of it. The best song ever was then played “Gloria” a blistering version. It’s a shame we didn’t get the b side of this one, one the best versions of “my generation” you can here. All that was left was the encore after this. This was “Banga” “People have the Power” and “Rock and Roll Nigger.” A very powerful finish to a great night. There were a lot more songs but my memory is shit but I do know we didn’t get “Horses.” I am ever so happy that I saw Patti Smith, now I am looking forward to the weekend and seeing Take That, the Stylistics and all of the other tribute bands in Benidorm.
