The Jack Eagle Retaliation

Eagle Towers

The weekend just gone reminded me of the Arab Strap song, “The first big weekend of the summer.” You couldn’t go wrong, Friday night, the Lee Brilleaux Memorial Show at Canvey, Saturday night, Jack and Pauls party in the other half of Great Baddow that Spen doesn’t own, Sunday over the Emirates to watch Arsenal humilate the upstarts from West London (funny how the one you love always let’s you down) and a day off work Monday to recover. Anyway this is for the Saturday night. Jack is 18 and his dad Paul is 50 this month so a joint party was arranged and one of the entertainments was for Jacks band to play. I wasn’t sure what to expect but the sounds of a band floated out of the house, this meant leaving the warmth of the chimenea and the comfort of a barrel of IPA to watch the lads. The band comprises of Jack on lead guitar, Michael on bass, Ryan on rhythm guitar and vocals and Joe on drums. They are actually very good, tight with plenty of attitude and they can really can play. They played 2 sets of covers of the newer punk and rock bands apart from the Pixies who have been about for years. They certainley got the crowd pogoing (Maurice) and dancing. It’s great too see the youngsters making their own music as it takes you back to the days when the Punk ethos was do it yourself, the only difference is that these 4 lads can actually do it. I enjoyed the Muse tracks and “Basket case” by Green Day, “Everlong” is alsosuch a great song. I must admit though that I didn’t know most of the others but they were all done well and the band looked as though they enjoyed themselves (the crowd certainley did). “Back in the night would have been good for us old farts, so get practising that one for next time. I also think that a lot of bands miss out on a wealth of great songs from the 60’s garage era, so get yourselves some of the Nuggets or Pebbles CD’s, Especially “I ain’t no miracle worker,” by the Brogues.
